9.00 am We’ll start the day with a short 50 min ferry ride from Split to Supetar on the island of Brač. This is the island made famous for white limestone, the island’s trademark, superb extra virgin olive oil, wines, seafood and friendly people.
From Supetar we’ll take a 20-minute drive inland to the rustic village of Škrip, the oldest village on the island and one of the most popular. Here we’ll take a wander through this ancient village and visit an old stone olive oil pressing mill, the Museum of Olive Oil. Tasting the oils, some infused with natural herbs and fruits, homemade jams, pate, figs, and freshly baked bread. We’ll enjoy these delicacies with a glass of local wine while learning a little about olive oil production and the traditions of the people of Island Brač.
From here we’ll make our way to the town of Nerežišća. As far back as the 11th century, this was the economic and religious centre of the island. Located inland and far enough away from the shores and marauding pirates! The most famous icon of this village is the church of St Peter and St Paul, with a small pine tree growing out of its apse! The church houses a valuable relief from the local sculptor Nikola Lozanica.
We’ll continue on through the heartland of the island to the highest point called Vidova Gora. From here the views over the coastline are stunning, with islands Hvar, Vis, and Korčula stretching out below in the shimmering blue Adriatic. On a clear day, the Italian coast is visible! Lunch will be served in an abandoned Sheperd’s Village, a traditional homestyle menu including lamb peka, (the ‘peka’ is a large iron-domed cooking utensil, where meats, potatoes and some vegetables, are slowly roasted over and under the coals) The lamb of Brač is considered a speciality due to the salty grasses and herbs the animals graze on.
A traditional Dalmatian peka Lunch will be served in an abandoned Sheperd’s Village…A highlight for many who have already visited Island Brač.
Following lunch we’ll head back to Supetar, visiting the Gallery of Dražen Jaksić, one of Croatia’s most famous and prolific stonemasonry sculptors, in his village of Donji Humac. From here a short 7 km drive will return us to our ferry, arriving back to Split at 19.00.
